What Causes Acne and Who Gets It?

Acne is a skin condition which happens when sebum (an oily substance) clogs the skin pores. This causes pimples to pop up on various parts of the body such as the face, neck, chest, shoulders and the back. It is one of the most common skin conditions in the world. In fact, research findings have shown that about 85 percent of people experience the condition at some point in life.

Who Gets Acne?

Acne affects people of all ages, races and ethnicity. However, it is more prevalent in certain individuals than others. For instance, it is more common in the adolescents and young adults. In fact studies have shown that about 85 percent of individuals between 12 to 14 years of age develop the disorder although in most cases it clears by the time they reach 30 years. Different people are prone to different kinds of acne because of their genetics and other factors.

Gender and Acne

In general, most males tend to suffer from serious acne when they are younger (in their teenage years) while most women get severe acne when they are older (between 20 and 40 years). This can be attributed to the fact that males have high levels of androgen (a male hormone) in their system during their teenage years. This triggers more sebum production leading to acne.

Women also have androgen hormone in their systems. It is basically the level of the hormone in the system that correlates to the type as well as the severity of the acne. In women, the hormone-related acne may come and go depending on their fertility cycle. Note that some birth control pills tend to suppress acne. In such cases, one might develop the condition after stopping to take the pills.

Adult Acne

The adult acne affect nearly 25 percent of adult men and about 50 percent of mature women. The two main types of adult acne are persistent acne and adult late on-set acne. Persistent acne is one that does not clear by the time one reaches mid 20’s and it is more common in women. It is mainly caused by bacterial infection in the skin dermis. Adult late on-set acne mainly affects adults.

Other Causes of Acne

Hereditary acne is caused by genetics and it runs in families. It may be occur because of inheriting the skin type from the parents. Acne may also be caused by use of performance enhancing steroids. The male hormone in such steroids encourage the production of sebum which clogs the skin pores, causing acne. The steroids may also alter the skin chemistry, which makes it prone to bacterial infection leading to acne.

Pregnant women also prone to acne infection. Hormone changes during the pregnancy may cause sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum. This causes the skin to become oily and susceptible to acne. Stressed individuals are equally prone to acne infection as their body tends to produce more androgen hormone in response. The hormone stimulates the production of sebum which clogs the pores causing acne.

Other common causes include certain underlying health conditions, skin and hair products, oily foods and some forms of medication such as corticosteroids, anticonvulsants and sobriety drugs.
